When Austin Collins decided to abandon the financial world for a shot at singer/songwriter stardom, he couldn’t possibly have imagined having to turn people away from his CD release party at Austin’s famed Stubb’s Barbeque. From that standing room only crowd eager to hear Something Better to the opening slot at the Austin City Limits Festival, 2005 proved a dream come true. And the future is just as promising.

Collins always knew he wanted to be a songwriter, but his parents wanted him to earn his degree and make a good living — and besides, he couldn’t finish any of his songs. But then something clicked for the Houston native, and he completed his first song, “Something Better.” The namesake tune of his Fat Caddy Records debut unlocked his creative dam.

While in the mountains of Colorado, Collins met musician/producer Billy Cerveny. They quickly bonded, and when Cerveny heard Collins’ songs, he told his young friend, “If you ever want to do a record, let me know.” A year later they reunited at Nashville’s Sputnik Studio, which is owned by Grammy®–winning engineer Mitch Dane. (The recording was mastered by two-time Grammy winner Richard Dodd.)

Producer Cerveny is proud of Collins’ creation. “I’d put this record against anything in the alt-country world,” he says. “Austin has it, whatever that is. I see nothing but a rapid ascent for him.” Critics like Texas Music magazine’s Rob Patterson agree, praising the album’s “catchy yet eloquent songs” and “high-quality, modern style.”
